To really plant the AI in the world, I decided to incorporate audio around him. The way I did this was through an audio source that is placed on an empty object as a child of the AI game object. After finding the perfectly fitting audio clip for the character from the Horror Sfx asset pack (Little Robot SOund Factory, 2015), the Murder of Crows clip, I added this to the audio source and adjusted the sound settings, including max distance which I set to 25 so that the player must be nearby in order for the audio to be heard.
