In order to start creating the texture, I needed to get a better User Interface layout:
I had to set the colours and create textures and layers in order to paint onto the crate. So after a lot of time creating and painting, I had to bake the colour map so that it was useful in Unity.
Here is what the colour map and final texture object looks like:
I now had to test the colour map in Unity. As you can see on the right of the screen I have dragged the maps into a material so that when the material is applied to the model, it fits.
As someone who has never used Blender before to create something like this, I am very happy with the outcome. The texturing isn't amazing but in the context of my 'dark' game, it will be fine. In fact, here is a screenshot of it in the world (current state world, not finished):
